Puppy Blocks Railroad, But The Real Reason It Can’t Move Breaks Everyone’s Heart

Chapter 9: The Unseen Watcher

Ethan’s heart raced as he watched the nurse approach with the strange device in her hands. It was a small, metallic contraption, its purpose unclear, but the way the nurse held it with such care suggested it was far from ordinary. The soft click of the machine as she powered it on seemed to cut through the tense silence of the room.

“What is that?” Ethan asked, his voice edged with curiosity and growing apprehension.

The nurse glanced up at him, her face pale but focused. “It’s a scanner,” she explained, her voice low. “We use it to detect any implanted devices or tracking mechanisms. I have a feeling that whatever’s been done to these puppies involves more than just physical abuse.”

Ethan’s mind spun. Tracking devices? Implanted mechanisms? His suspicions about the puppies being part of a larger experiment seemed to be spiraling out of control. He had thought he was merely helping a lost puppy—now he was wondering if the situation was far darker than he could imagine.

Dr. Maxwell stepped forward, her expression hardening as she joined the nurse at the table. She glanced at Ethan, her eyes filled with quiet urgency. “If these puppies were part of an experiment, there’s a good chance they were injected with something—or had something inserted into them. We need to know what we’re dealing with if we’re going to stop this.”

Ethan watched as the nurse ran the device over the second puppy, its body still and lifeless on the table. The scanner emitted a soft, pulsing light, and for a moment, everything seemed to hold its breath. The nurse paused, her eyes narrowing in concentration, before speaking again.

“There’s something,” she said, her voice shaky. “I’m picking up a faint signal. It’s coming from deep within the puppy’s body.”

Dr. Maxwell’s eyes flickered with recognition. “I thought so. The training—they were conditioned, yes, but they might have been microchipped, or worse. We need to know what kind of signal this is.”

Ethan’s stomach twisted. The idea that these puppies had been so thoroughly controlled, so deliberately manipulated, made him sick. His mind wandered back to the question that had haunted him since he found the first puppy: Why? Why would anyone do this to animals? And why was he being pulled into this web?

The nurse stepped back from the table, her face grim. “It’s a tracking chip,” she said. “But it’s not just for location. This one… it’s transmitting a signal to someone.”

A chill ran down Ethan’s spine as the words sank in. “Someone’s been tracking them? But why?”

Dr. Maxwell’s eyes darkened. “I don’t know yet. But this is more than just an experiment. Someone wants these puppies under control. They’re monitoring them, controlling them from a distance.”

Ethan felt a surge of anger rise within him. He had always known that there were dark corners of the world where cruelty reigned, but this was something else entirely. It was organized. Calculated. Whoever was behind this wasn’t just abusing these animals—they were using them as pawns in some kind of twisted game.

“We need to find out who’s responsible,” Dr. Maxwell said, her voice steady but filled with determination. “If they’re tracking these puppies, it’s only a matter of time before they come for us. And we won’t be able to stop them.”

Ethan’s thoughts raced. He had no idea who was behind all of this, but one thing was clear: they were watching. The puppies were just the beginning. Whoever was behind this had been planning this for a long time, and now Ethan was caught in the middle.

His eyes flickered toward the door, and the feeling of being watched crept over him once more. Someone was out there, he realized. Watching them. Watching him.

As the nurse began to contact authorities, Dr. Maxwell leaned in close to Ethan, her voice low. “You’re in this now. And you won’t be able to walk away from it. Not until we find out who’s behind all of this.”

Ethan nodded, his resolve hardening. The situation was far more dangerous than he had ever imagined. But he couldn’t back down now. He had to find out who was pulling the strings—and stop them.

But as the call to the authorities was made, a shadow outside the clinic caught Ethan’s attention. Someone was watching them from the window.
