Chapter 17: The Truth Behind the Door

The door creaked open with a metallic groan, revealing a dimly lit room beyond. Ethan stepped forward, his heart pounding in his chest, but the man beside him held up a hand, signaling for him to wait.
Ethan’s eyes scanned the room, trying to make out any details in the low light. The space was cold, the air thick with a musty, chemical smell. There were rows of computers lining the walls, their screens flickering with strange data. Behind the monitors were shelves upon shelves of glass vials, filled with clear liquid, some glowing faintly in the darkness. The place felt like an abandoned lab, but there was a strange, unsettling hum in the air, as if it had never truly been left behind.
“This is it,” the man said, his voice low and solemn. “The heart of it all.”
Ethan’s pulse quickened. “What is this place?”
The man didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked over to one of the monitors and punched in a few commands. The screen flickered to life, displaying rows of numbers and figures that meant nothing to Ethan.
“This is where the experiments were conducted,” the man continued, turning toward Ethan. “This is where it all started. The puppies, the microchips, the training… it was all part of a larger project.”
Ethan’s mind raced. “What kind of project?” He couldn’t wrap his head around it. This didn’t feel like something that could just be explained away. It felt too deep, too vast.
The man sighed, clearly exhausted by the weight of the truth. “The project was meant to control. To create something that could be monitored and manipulated from afar. The puppies were just the beginning, but they were the key. Once the conditioning was perfected, they were going to test it on humans.”
Ethan recoiled at the thought. “Humans? You mean they were planning to use these methods on people?”
The man nodded grimly. “That’s what they wanted. And you, Ethan… you were the perfect candidate.”
Ethan felt a jolt of realization. “Me? Why?”
The man didn’t respond at first, but his eyes darkened. “Because you’re tied to it. Your father was involved in the original research. This—” He gestured to the room around them. “—was his work. And now, you’re part of it.”
Ethan’s mind spun. His father? He barely knew the man. What did this have to do with him? “My father… I don’t understand.”
“You don’t remember,” the man said, his voice laced with regret. “He kept you hidden, protected. But you’re his legacy. And now, they want you. They want what your father built.”
The words hit Ethan like a punch to the stomach. His mind struggled to process it all. His father had been involved in this? Had he known what was going on? What kind of legacy had he left?
“Who are they?” Ethan demanded, his voice shaking. “Who’s behind all of this?”
The man’s gaze darkened. “The ones who started it. The ones who want control. They’ve been watching you for years, Ethan. You’re not safe here.”
Ethan’s breath hitched as the weight of the man’s words sank in. They’ve been watching me. A chilling thought that only confirmed his worst fears. He was in too deep, and there was no way out.
Suddenly, a sharp noise from behind them made Ethan’s heart skip a beat. Someone was coming. The man turned quickly, his face tight with urgency.
“We need to go,” the man said, grabbing Ethan’s arm and pulling him toward the back door. “Now.”
As they raced toward the exit, Ethan’s mind was reeling with the truth. His father, the experiments, the puppies—they were all connected, and he was now caught in the center of it all.
But as they reached the door, Ethan heard something else—voices, shouting, coming closer. They weren’t alone anymore.
