Puppy Blocks Railroad, But The Real Reason It Can’t Move Breaks Everyone’s Heart

Chapter 5: The Unknown Hand

The animal clinic was only a few miles away, but the drive felt like an eternity. Ethan couldn’t tear his eyes away from the little puppy in his lap, still barely conscious, its small body limp and fragile. Every breath it took seemed like a struggle, and Ethan’s heart tightened with every soft whimper the puppy made. He kept whispering assurances to the little creature, though he wasn’t sure if it could even hear him.

The animal control officer, whose name turned out to be Sarah, drove with practiced precision, her hands tight on the steering wheel as she focused on the road ahead. Every few seconds, her eyes flickered to the rearview mirror, checking on Ethan and the puppy.

“Hang in there,” Sarah murmured, more to herself than to Ethan. “We’re almost there.”

Ethan nodded, not trusting himself to speak. His mind was spinning, racing through the possibilities. Who would do something like this? Who would leave a helpless puppy on the train tracks to die? The thought gnawed at him, turning over and over, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t come up with a reasonable explanation.

The car rumbled as they hit a bump in the road, and Ethan instinctively tightened his grip on the puppy, careful not to jostle it. He felt a sudden sense of responsibility for this little life, even though he knew he had no way of knowing what had led to this moment.

When they arrived at the clinic, Sarah jumped out of the car and hurried around to open the door. “Stay here,” she said quickly, “I’ll get the vet.”

Ethan stayed in the car, the puppy still in his arms. He had hoped that the clinic would be bustling with activity, that there would be a team of people ready to jump into action. But instead, there was only the quiet hum of fluorescent lights and the faint scent of antiseptic.

A few moments later, the vet—a middle-aged woman with short, graying hair—came rushing outside, her face set in a mask of concern. She knelt beside Ethan, taking the puppy from his arms with gentle hands.

“We need to get it inside, now,” she said firmly, motioning for Ethan to follow her. “Come on.”

Ethan followed her into the clinic, his mind racing. The vet spoke to a nurse as she carried the puppy into the back room, and Ethan was left standing in the sterile, quiet waiting area. He couldn’t stop pacing. His thoughts were a whirlwind of confusion and worry. What if they couldn’t save it? What if he was too late?

A few minutes later, Sarah returned to the waiting area, her expression unreadable. She walked over to Ethan, placing a hand on his shoulder. “They’re doing everything they can,” she said quietly, her tone soft but uncertain. “But we might be looking at something more serious than we thought. There could be internal injuries.”

Ethan’s stomach churned. He hadn’t even considered that. He’d been so focused on the puppy’s immediate condition—its shock, its shallow breathing—that he hadn’t thought about what else could be wrong.

He ran a hand through his hair, frustration mounting. “What could cause this? Why would someone do this to a dog? It doesn’t make sense.”

Sarah shook her head, her eyes narrowing. “I don’t know, but I’ve seen cases before. Animals abandoned in dangerous places, left to fend for themselves. It’s cruel, but it happens.”

Ethan felt a pang of anger at the thought. He had to know more. He couldn’t just sit here and wait. Something was wrong with this whole situation. This wasn’t a random act of cruelty—it felt like it was part of something bigger.

He couldn’t shake the feeling that the puppy had been left there for a reason. But who would do such a thing, and why?

As Ethan waited for news, a cold thought crept into his mind: was this just the beginning of something darker?
