Puppy Blocks Railroad, But The Real Reason It Can’t Move Breaks Everyone’s Heart

Chapter 6: The Call for Answers

Ethan sat in the sterile, white waiting room of the animal clinic, his fingers drumming nervously on the arm of the chair. The clock on the wall ticked slowly, each second stretching into what felt like hours. He couldn’t help but replay the scene over and over in his mind—the puppy, the train, and the strange feeling that had gripped him the moment he first saw it.

The vet, Dr. Maxwell, had taken the puppy to the back almost immediately after they arrived, and though she assured him they were doing everything they could, Ethan felt a gnawing sense of helplessness. He had saved it from the tracks, but was it too late? Could they really undo the damage? His stomach churned at the thought.

Sarah, who had been by his side since the moment he found the puppy, sat quietly next to him, her expression unreadable. Ethan could tell she was just as anxious, though she tried her best to remain calm. She had been helpful—more than helpful—but the truth was, Ethan wasn’t sure he trusted anyone else with this. Not after what had happened. There was something about this whole situation that didn’t add up, and he couldn’t ignore the gut feeling that it was part of something far bigger than he could comprehend.

“I’ve been thinking,” Ethan said suddenly, breaking the silence. His voice was low, almost tentative, as if the words themselves weren’t sure they should be said. “Who would do something like this? Who would just leave a puppy on the tracks like that?”

Sarah looked at him, her brows furrowing in thought. “I don’t know,” she said slowly, her voice careful. “I’ve seen a lot of neglect in my time, but leaving an animal to die like that… It’s beyond cruel. There has to be a reason behind it.”

Ethan’s mind raced. He couldn’t shake the feeling that this was no accident. He couldn’t ignore the way the puppy had been so still, almost as if it had been waiting for something—or someone. It wasn’t just a victim of neglect; it was part of a plan, part of a bigger picture that he wasn’t seeing.

“I just… I don’t understand,” Ethan muttered, more to himself than to Sarah. “Who would do this to a dog? And why? What’s the connection?”

Sarah didn’t respond right away. She seemed to be choosing her words carefully. After a long pause, she finally spoke, her voice quiet but laced with concern.

“I’ve seen cases before—animals, mostly dogs, who were used for… experiments. Tests. People do terrible things in the name of science, sometimes. But this feels different. This puppy wasn’t just abandoned. It was left to die. That’s not typical behavior.”

Ethan’s heart skipped a beat. “You think this puppy was part of some kind of experiment?”

Sarah met his gaze, her eyes serious. “I’m not saying for sure, but it’s a possibility. There are people out there who’ll use animals for all sorts of things. And they don’t care about the consequences.”

Ethan leaned back in his chair, his mind reeling. An experiment? That thought sent chills down his spine. Could it be true? Had the puppy been a part of something dark? Something sinister? The possibility made his blood run cold, and the gnawing feeling in his gut only grew stronger.

“Do you think someone’s watching us?” Ethan asked suddenly, his voice tinged with the unease that had been growing in him since he found the puppy on the tracks. “What if we’ve been marked? What if… someone’s behind all this?”

Sarah didn’t answer immediately. She just looked at him, her expression unreadable, as if she was trying to decide how much to say. Finally, she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper.

“We need to be careful, Ethan. Whoever is behind this won’t stop. Not if they’ve gone this far.”

Ethan swallowed hard. The weight of her words settled over him like a heavy cloak. He wasn’t just caught in the middle of a rescue mission—he was caught in the middle of something much larger, much darker.

And now, he couldn’t walk away.

The sound of footsteps in the hallway broke the silence, and Ethan’s heart leapt in his chest. Had the vet returned? Or was something more dangerous approaching?
