Puppy Blocks Railroad, But The Real Reason It Can’t Move Breaks Everyone’s Heart

Chapter 13: The Shadow in the Hallway

The cold, sterile air of the clinic seemed to press in on Ethan as he was yanked down the hallway by the mysterious man. Every step felt heavier than the last, his heart racing with every sound of hurried footsteps behind him. The man’s grip on his arm was firm, unyielding, but Ethan didn’t resist. He couldn’t afford to. Not now.

As they passed the door to the examination room, Ethan’s eyes flickered toward the figures still inside. The men in black had regrouped, their faces twisted in frustration. But they didn’t pursue. It seemed they were waiting for something. Or perhaps for someone.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” the mysterious man muttered under his breath as they moved swiftly toward the back exit. “They’re not going to let you walk away that easily.”

Ethan glanced over at him, his mind whirling with questions. “Who are you?” he asked, his voice strained with a mix of gratitude and confusion. “And why are you helping me?”

The man didn’t respond right away, his gaze fixed forward, scanning the corridor as if expecting danger at every corner. His features were hard to read, the darkness of the hallway hiding his expression, but his eyes—sharp, calculating—spoke volumes. He was no stranger to danger.

“Let’s just say I have my reasons,” the man finally said, his voice clipped. “And right now, you don’t have the luxury of asking too many questions.”

Ethan didn’t push. He knew time was running out. The men in black wouldn’t be distracted for long. They were too methodical, too organized. This wasn’t over yet.

The hallway led to a back door, and as they approached, Ethan’s thoughts flashed to Dr. Maxwell. She had helped him. She had risked everything to stand in front of him, and now she was being held by those people. Would she be okay? Was she safe?

As if sensing his concern, the man spoke again, his voice soft but commanding. “Dr. Maxwell will be fine,” he said. “But right now, we need to get you out of here. She’ll be able to handle herself. You need to trust me.”

Ethan hesitated, torn between his need to help the woman who had risked her life for him and the urgent need to escape. His mind flashed back to the puppy, still in critical condition, and the strange situation that had led him here. All of it was connected, he was certain of it now. The puppies, the experiments, the men in black—they were all part of something much bigger, something far darker.

They reached the back exit, and the man pushed open the door, ushering Ethan through into the cool night air. The moon was high, casting a pale light over the small parking lot behind the clinic. Ethan’s breath caught in his throat as he realized how exposed they were. There were no shadows here, no cover, and the sound of their hurried steps was all too loud in the silence.

“Get in,” the man commanded, gesturing toward a black car parked near the exit. The windows were tinted, the car sleek and unmarked, like it belonged to someone who didn’t want to be noticed. Ethan didn’t ask questions. He couldn’t afford to.

They climbed into the car, and the man slammed the door behind them. The engine roared to life, and the car shot forward, tearing through the dark streets with a speed that made Ethan’s stomach churn.

As they sped away, Ethan glanced out the window, his thoughts still racing. He had no idea where they were going, or who this man really was, but one thing was clear: he had just stepped into a world of darkness and intrigue far deeper than he could have ever imagined.

“I’m taking you somewhere safe,” the man said, his voice firm. “But we’re not out of danger yet. You’ve made a powerful enemy, Ethan. And they’re not going to let you go easily.”

Ethan didn’t respond. He couldn’t. His thoughts were too scattered. But as the city lights faded behind them, a sense of foreboding crept over him. He didn’t know what was waiting for him at the end of this journey, but he knew one thing for sure: whatever it was, it was only just beginning.

And as they turned onto a dark, unfamiliar road, Ethan caught a glimpse of something in the rearview mirror: a pair of headlights, following them.
