Puppy Blocks Railroad, But The Real Reason It Can’t Move Breaks Everyone’s Heart

Chapter 30: The Final Choice

The figure that appeared in the doorway was a shock. Ethan’s breath caught in his throat as he saw a woman step into the room, her eyes locked onto him with an intensity that made everything else fade into the background. She was tall, with striking features and an air of authority that seemed to command the room. Her eyes, however, held something much deeper—a sadness, perhaps even regret, mixed with something else, something far darker.

Ethan’s heart raced, his mind spinning with questions. Who was this? The woman seemed familiar, but he couldn’t place her face. She stepped forward, and the man in black—who had been watching Ethan with that calculating smirk—tensed, his body language shifting from confident to cautious.

“Ethan,” the woman said, her voice smooth but laden with emotion. “I didn’t want you to find out this way.”

Ethan felt a wave of confusion wash over him. Find out what? He had thought he knew everything—he had uncovered the truth about his father’s involvement in the experiments, the machine, the man in black—but now, this woman, standing before him like some ghost from his past, threatened to shatter everything he thought he understood.

“Who are you?” Ethan demanded, his voice trembling. “What do you want with me?”

The woman didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she glanced at Dr. Maxwell, her gaze softening for just a moment. Then, with a slow, almost reluctant sigh, she turned her attention back to Ethan.

“My name is Caroline,” she said quietly. “And I’m your mother.”

Ethan’s world tilted on its axis. His mother. His mother? The word hit him like a physical blow, leaving him stunned and disoriented. His mind couldn’t process it. He had never known his mother. She had disappeared from his life when he was young, and his father had always been there, a silent guardian, a mysterious figure.

He had never known the full story. But now, standing before him, was this woman who claimed to be his mother. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The questions, the anger, the confusion—they all piled up inside him, but he didn’t know where to start.

Caroline took a step closer, her gaze never leaving Ethan. “I never wanted you to be part of this, Ethan. But you were always going to be. Your father’s work… my work… it’s all connected. We built it together.”

Ethan’s stomach churned as he took a step back, his mind reeling. “What do you mean? What is all of this? Why did you leave me? Why—why didn’t you tell me any of this?”

Caroline’s expression hardened, her voice growing quieter, more urgent. “Because I couldn’t, Ethan. I couldn’t tell you the truth without putting you in danger. You’re the key to everything. You’re the one they’ve been watching, the one they’ve been waiting for.”

Ethan’s head swam with a mixture of anger and disbelief. He had spent years searching for answers, only to have everything he thought he knew ripped away from him in a single moment. She was part of this all along. His mother, the woman he had longed to know, was just as tangled in this web of control and manipulation as the rest of them.

“I didn’t choose this,” he spat, his voice thick with emotion. “None of this was my choice.”

Caroline’s gaze softened. “I know. But the choices were never really ours to make, Ethan. This was always the plan. It’s bigger than all of us.”

Ethan’s anger flared. “So, what now? You expect me to just accept this? To accept you?”

The machine behind them hummed louder, its red sensors blinking with a growing intensity. The countdown, though paused, felt like it was still ticking in the back of his mind, the threat of it always lingering, just beyond the edge of understanding.

Caroline looked at the machine, then back at Ethan, her face filled with an unreadable sadness. “You have a choice, Ethan,” she said, her voice barely audible. “You can either stop this, destroy the machine, and everything it represents… or you can join us. But know this: either choice will change everything.”

Ethan felt the weight of her words settle over him. He had never imagined being caught in the middle of such a monumental decision. Destroy everything or become part of it? His heart raced, his thoughts a blur as he realized that whatever he chose would be irreversible.

And as the door behind Caroline creaked open, Ethan felt a cold shiver run down his spine. Someone else was here, and this time, they weren’t going to let him choose without consequences.
