Chapter 18: The Edge of Revelation
Ethan’s heart raced as the man yanked open the back door, shoving him into the narrow, dimly lit hallway. The air felt cold, stale, as if it hadn’t been disturbed in years. Ethan’s mind was still reeling from the revelation—the truth about his father, the experiments, the connection between the puppies, and the chilling realization that he was somehow part of it all.
The man didn’t slow his pace, his grip tight on Ethan’s arm as they moved quickly through the building. Ethan could hear the footsteps behind them, growing louder, closer. They weren’t alone. Whoever was after them wasn’t far behind.
“Why are they after me?” Ethan gasped, his voice strained from the rush. His mind raced, trying to make sense of it all. My father…
The man’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t answer immediately. They turned another corner, the sound of their footsteps echoing in the empty halls.
“Your father was part of the research,” the man said, his voice quiet but urgent. “You’re the key to it all. They want to use you—take what he started and finish what they started.”
Ethan stumbled, his heart thundering. “But what does that mean for me? What do they want from me?”
“They want control,” the man said sharply, glancing over his shoulder. “Your father was on the verge of something big—something that could change everything. And now they’ll do whatever it takes to finish it. They’ve been looking for you for years, Ethan.”
The hallway seemed to stretch on forever, but finally, they reached a door at the end. The man’s hand was already on the handle when a voice from behind them stopped him dead in his tracks.
“Going somewhere?” The voice was cold, unmistakably familiar.
Ethan froze. It was the same voice from before, the one he had heard when the men in black had been after him. The man in the doorway stepped into view, his face shadowed, but his presence unmistakable.
The man in the hallway turned, his face grim. “We don’t have time for this.”
Ethan’s breath caught in his throat as the man from before stepped forward. “You’re not getting away this time.”
“Move!” The stranger shoved Ethan toward the door, but as he turned to open it, the man in black moved swiftly, blocking their escape.
Ethan’s pulse quickened. “What do you want from me?” he demanded. “Why me? Why are you doing this?”
The man in black’s lips curled into a cold smile. “You don’t understand yet, do you? It’s not just about you. It’s about what you represent. Your father’s legacy is a key to a larger operation. And we’re not letting you walk away from this.”
Ethan’s eyes widened. The truth was starting to surface, but the weight of it was almost too much to bear. What did this have to do with his father? He still couldn’t make sense of it all.
The man in black stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. “You’ve seen too much already. But you’re not going anywhere.”
Ethan took a step back, his eyes darting around for an escape route, but the hallways seemed to close in around him. The door was still closed, and now they were trapped.
Just then, a sharp noise rang out from behind them—footsteps, quickly approaching.
The man in black stiffened, his attention momentarily diverted. “They’re coming,” he muttered.
Ethan’s heart raced as a new wave of panic surged through him. Who else was coming? And were they here to help him, or to make sure he was silenced?
As the footsteps grew louder, Ethan knew there was no turning back now. Whoever was on the other side of that door—whether ally or enemy—would decide everything.
