Puppy Blocks Railroad, But The Real Reason It Can’t Move Breaks Everyone’s Heart

Chapter 7: The Hidden Threat

Ethan barely had time to catch his breath before Dr. Maxwell reappeared, her face serious as she walked toward them. The sense of dread in Ethan’s chest tightened. He stood up, his legs unsteady, though his mind was already racing with questions. Was the puppy okay? What had they found? His heart pounded in his chest as he watched the vet approach, her eyes avoiding his as if she wasn’t sure how to begin.

“I’ve… done what I can,” Dr. Maxwell said, her voice low and cautious. She seemed reluctant to meet his gaze, which made Ethan’s anxiety spike even higher.

“Is it going to survive?” Ethan asked, the words spilling out before he could stop them. His mind was clouded with fear, fear that he might already know the answer.

Dr. Maxwell hesitated, clearly weighing her response. “The puppy’s alive for now,” she said slowly, “but it’s in a critical condition. It’s suffered severe shock, and I’m concerned about potential internal injuries. I’ve given it fluids and pain relief, but—”

“Is it going to make it?” Ethan interrupted, his voice almost desperate now.

“I don’t know,” she replied honestly, her eyes flickering with sympathy. “It’s too early to say. I can only do so much without knowing what we’re dealing with.”

Ethan’s stomach dropped. He’d done everything he could to save this little life, but now it felt like it was slipping away. The frustration boiled inside him. He could barely process what Dr. Maxwell was saying—his mind was spinning, focusing instead on the real problem at hand. Something had brought this puppy to the tracks, and Ethan had no doubt that it wasn’t by accident.

“Is it possible this wasn’t just neglect?” Ethan asked, his voice tight with urgency. “Could someone have done this on purpose? Left the puppy there to die?”

Dr. Maxwell’s face went still for a moment, her brow furrowing. She looked around as if making sure no one else was listening. “I don’t want to alarm you,” she said, lowering her voice, “but I’ve seen signs before. The puppy’s condition—it’s not consistent with something that just happened randomly. It’s too calculated.”

Ethan’s heart raced as his suspicions seemed to be confirmed. “Calculated? What do you mean?”

“I think this puppy was put there for a reason,” Dr. Maxwell continued, her voice dropping lower. “I’m not sure what that reason is, but I’ve seen this before. Some people use animals as test subjects, as bait for something bigger. And when they’re done with them, they abandon them.”

The words hit Ethan like a punch to the gut. “Test subjects? Bait?” He could hardly believe what he was hearing. It was all too much—too much to absorb in one moment. Who would do such a thing? Why? And why this puppy?

“I don’t have all the answers,” Dr. Maxwell said, her voice almost apologetic, “but there’s something about this that feels wrong. And I don’t think it’s over.”

Ethan stood there, stunned. The world seemed to shift beneath him. His thoughts were spinning out of control. He had thought this was just a stray animal in trouble, something that could be fixed with a little care and attention. But now he was caught in something much deeper, much darker. This wasn’t just a puppy on the tracks—it was part of something far more sinister.

Dr. Maxwell seemed to sense his turmoil. “I know this is a lot to take in,” she said softly, “but we need to figure out who did this. If this puppy is a part of something more, you’re not just saving a life—you’re uncovering a much bigger problem.”

Ethan nodded numbly, the weight of her words settling over him like a heavy cloak. He had to know the truth. He couldn’t let this go, not when there was something darker lurking in the shadows.

Just then, a nurse entered the room, her face pale. “Dr. Maxwell, you need to come quick. There’s something you need to see in the back.”

Dr. Maxwell’s eyes widened. “What is it?”

The nurse didn’t answer immediately, but her eyes told the whole story. “It’s the puppy,” she said, her voice shaking. “It’s not alone.”

Ethan’s blood ran cold as he followed Dr. Maxwell and the nurse toward the back room. The air seemed to thicken with tension, and every step felt heavier than the last.

What did the nurse mean? Was there more to this than just a single abandoned puppy?
