She Had 12 Children, Then Her Husband Left Her, See How They Look 27 Years Later

Chapter 15: The Weight of Regret

The kitchen was quiet as Lucy moved around, preparing a simple meal. Justin stood there, watching her, trying to find the right words, but they all seemed inadequate. He had spent so many years convincing himself that the past didn’t matter, that he could bury it and move on. But now, standing in the room with Lucy, it was impossible to ignore the enormity of what he had done.

Lucy didn’t look back as she stirred the contents of the pot on the stove. Her movements were calm, methodical, but there was a tension in her posture, an unspoken distance between them that neither of them had ever really crossed.

“I don’t expect anything from you, Justin,” Lucy said finally, her voice soft but firm. “You left us. And for years, you were gone. I raised those girls on my own. We made a life without you.”

Justin swallowed hard, the words caught in his throat. “I know,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. “I know I can’t take that away. I can’t fix what I broke.”

Lucy paused, her back still to him. “You can’t fix it, no,” she said, her voice tinged with something that could have been either resignation or acceptance. “But you can stop running. You can stop pretending that you didn’t leave a family behind. That you didn’t hurt us.”

The silence that followed was thick, almost suffocating. Justin tried to steady his breath, but his chest felt tight. He had known this day would come. The day when the weight of his choices would finally settle on him, and he would have to face the truth of what he had done. But knowing it was coming didn’t make it any easier.

“I don’t deserve forgiveness,” Justin said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t expect you to forgive me. I just… I needed to try. I needed to see if there was any way back.”

Lucy turned then, her eyes meeting his. There was no anger in them, but there was something else—something that had long been buried under the weight of years of struggle. “There’s no way back, Justin. Not for me. Not for you. But maybe for the girls… maybe they can find it in themselves to forgive you. Maybe. But that’s up to them.”

Her words hung in the air, heavy and final. Justin could feel the truth of them settle in his chest like a stone. He had spent so long thinking that he could fix everything, that somehow, there was a way to undo the damage. But there wasn’t. The damage had been done.

Lucy turned back to the stove, the conversation over for now. Justin stood there, feeling the finality of it all. He had hoped for something different, for some kind of resolution, but instead, all he had was the weight of his past, pressing down on him harder than ever before.

As Justin prepares to leave, he’s confronted with one last chance to make amends—but will he be able to face the final truth?
