Chapter 13: The Door That Opens

Justin stood at the door, his hand still resting on the buzzer. The moment felt suspended in time. The building was quiet, the world outside bustling with life, yet in this small, dimly lit hallway, everything felt still, as if the universe itself was holding its breath. He didn’t know what he was expecting, but the uncertainty of it all felt suffocating.
His fingers hovered over the button, but he couldn’t bring himself to press it. There was so much he needed to say, so much he had kept buried for years, and he wasn’t sure if he was ready to hear the truth. Would Lucy slam the door in his face? Would she let him speak, or would she simply turn her back, just as he had turned his on her and the children all those years ago?
He thought back to the last time he had seen her—the night he walked out without a word, leaving her to pick up the pieces of a shattered dream. He had promised himself it was for the best, that he was just one man who couldn’t bear the weight of their world. But looking back now, with the heavy burden of regret settling on his chest, he understood just how wrong he had been.
Lucy had done it all. She had raised their daughters. She had fought, alone, through the chaos and the exhaustion, never giving up. And he had been absent from it all. For what? For a life of fleeting moments, of empty freedom? The freedom that had led him here, standing at the door of his past, with nothing but the weight of his failure on his shoulders?
His mind raced. What would she say to him? Would she even want to hear him? He had abandoned her, and now, nearly three decades later, he was here, hoping to be let in. He wasn’t sure if he was seeking forgiveness, redemption, or simply a chance to explain himself.
Just as he gathered the courage to press the buzzer, the door swung open.
There she was. Lucy. Older, but still the same woman he had walked away from. Her eyes, though tired, still held that same spark—a fire he had long extinguished with his absence.
Justin opened his mouth to speak, but the words caught in his throat. She simply looked at him for a long moment, studying him, before stepping aside, silently inviting him in.
The door closed behind him with a soft thud.
Justin steps into a life he thought he had left behind. But is it too late to rebuild what he broke?
