She Had 12 Children, Then Her Husband Left Her, See How They Look 27 Years Later

Chapter 11: A Door That Won’t Open

The days since Justin had first set foot in New York felt like a blur. His mind had been consumed with the crushing weight of his past, each step he took heavier than the last. He had come here hoping to find a way back into the lives of the children he had abandoned, but now, as he stood outside the hospital, waiting for Lila, the hope that had once sparked inside him felt faint.

It was hard to pinpoint exactly when he had crossed the line from desperation to resignation. Maybe it was the moment Lila had turned away from him in the waiting room. Maybe it had been the realization that his past mistakes were more than just mistakes—they were scars, not only on him but on everyone he had hurt. He had never fully grasped the impact of his choices until now, until he was staring at the faces of the people he had left behind, only to see them thriving, succeeding, and living full lives without him.

The door to the hospital slid open, and Justin stood there for a moment, frozen, watching Lila approach. There was no warmth in her expression, no sign of recognition or forgiveness. She had barely spoken to him since their first encounter, and each time he had tried to reach out, to explain, she had withdrawn even further. He had been foolish to think he could waltz back into their lives and expect everything to be okay.

Lila’s presence made him acutely aware of just how far he had fallen from the man he once thought he could be. She walked toward him, her eyes sharp and calculating, the same eyes that once looked at him with trust, now narrowed with the coldness of reality.

“Why are you still here?” she asked, her voice laced with a mixture of disdain and exhaustion. There was no hint of kindness in her tone. She had already made up her mind about him, and nothing he could say would change it.

“I know I can’t make up for the past,” Justin began, his voice shaky, but he couldn’t seem to get the words right. “I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I need to try. I—”

Lila held up a hand, silencing him before he could continue. “You don’t get to just walk back into our lives, Justin. You don’t get to decide when it’s time to be a father.”

Her words stung more than he could have anticipated. His throat tightened as she turned away from him, the finality in her movement clear. Justin felt an overwhelming sense of defeat, a feeling he had never experienced before.

He had hoped for some kind of reconciliation, some sliver of redemption. But now, standing before the woman he had failed, he realized how hollow his hope had been. There was no easy way back. There was no forgiveness waiting at the end of this journey.

Lila disappeared down the hallway, and Justin was left standing in the silence of the hospital, the echo of his failure ringing in his ears.

Justin, faced with the stark reality of his failure, makes a final attempt to reach out to Lucy. But will she even let him in?
