Chapter 12: The Final Confrontation

Justin sat on the edge of his bed, the room feeling colder than it ever had before. He had left the hospital hours ago, the words Lila had spoken still echoing in his mind. You don’t get to decide when it’s time to be a father. She had made it clear that he was not welcome, not just in her life, but in the lives of all his daughters. He had come to New York, hoping for some sliver of reconciliation, but it seemed like that door had already closed. The distance between him and his family had become unbridgeable, and now, faced with the truth, he wasn’t sure what he was even doing here.
He had known that reentering their lives wouldn’t be easy. But the coldness, the finality in Lila’s voice—he hadn’t anticipated that. For the first time, Justin felt completely, utterly alone. And for the first time, he realized that his actions, his choices, had left him with nothing but a broken past and no way to fix it.
But there was still one person he hadn’t faced—the person who had always been at the center of it all: Lucy. The woman he had abandoned all those years ago. He had thought about her every day since he had left, but it wasn’t until now, standing in the wake of his failed attempts, that he understood just how much he had taken her for granted.
She had raised twelve children alone, fighting through every hardship, every sleepless night, and still managing to hold her family together. And he had walked away from all of it. He had watched from afar, hiding behind excuses and rationalizations, but now, the truth was undeniable.
Justin stood up and grabbed his coat. There was no more running from this. He had to face Lucy. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting—whether she would even let him in, or if she would slam the door in his face. But he couldn’t leave without trying.
As he stepped outside, the cold air hit him like a slap. His breath hung in the air as he made his way to the subway. Each step felt heavier than the last. He was facing a woman who had fought alone, who had built a life without him. And he, the man who had abandoned her, was now coming back, hoping for a chance at redemption. But what if she didn’t want it?
He arrived at her apartment building just as the sun began to set. The world felt quieter here, as though everything was holding its breath, waiting for what would come next. He walked up to the door, his hand hovering above the buzzer.
He had no idea what to say. He had no idea what to expect. But it didn’t matter. He had to face her.
Justin stands at the door of his past, unsure if he’ll be able to handle the truth that awaits him on the other side.
