Chapter Five: The Hidden Truth

The hospital’s corridors felt longer that evening, their quiet emptiness pressing in on Elena as she walked, her steps echoing off the cold, sterile walls. She had searched the building for hours, calling for Valorian, but the mastiff remained elusive. It was as if he had vanished into thin air.
Elena’s thoughts were clouded by concern. Abigail had briefly regained consciousness, but the girl’s vague words only added to the mystery. “He saved me.” What did Abigail mean? Who was “he”? And why was she so connected to the dog?
Elena rounded the corner, pausing at the nurse’s station. “Have you seen the dog? Valorian?” she asked, her voice tight with frustration.
The nurse behind the counter looked up, shaking her head. “I’m sorry, I haven’t seen him. He’s not on the premises, as far as I know.”
Elena felt a chill run through her. It wasn’t like the dog to wander off. There was something deeper going on here. Something that no one had yet uncovered.
Just as she was about to turn and head back to Abigail’s room, the elevator doors opened with a soft ding. A man in a suit stepped out, his face grim. He was tall, with sharp eyes and an air of authority that immediately put Elena on edge.
“Elena Ward?” he asked, his voice low and measured.
She stiffened. “Yes? Can I help you?”
The man’s eyes swept over her, then focused on her face with unnerving intensity. “Detective Barnes. I need to speak with you. It’s about Abigail Warren.”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. “What about Abigail?” Her voice was barely a whisper, her fear creeping up her spine.
“There’s been an update,” Barnes said, his tone grave. “We’ve been tracking her mother’s movements. Claire Warren is connected to something much bigger than we initially thought. And I need you to understand that Abigail’s situation is more dangerous than we realized.”
Elena’s stomach dropped. “What are you saying?”
Barnes glanced around before lowering his voice. “Abigail is linked to a larger trafficking network. We’ve been investigating it for months, but she’s not just a victim—she’s part of the operation. She’s been marked.”
Elena felt as though the floor had dropped out from beneath her. “Marked? What does that mean? How is she involved?”
Barnes hesitated, his eyes darkening. “I can’t explain it all yet. But I believe Abigail was chosen. This whole thing is much bigger than anyone could have predicted. And whoever is behind this, they’re coming for her.”
A sense of dread filled Elena’s chest. The more she learned, the more she realized how little she truly understood. The dog, Abigail’s connection to the trafficking ring, the mysterious men pulling the strings—it was all converging in a way she hadn’t anticipated.
Before she could ask more questions, a distant sound—footsteps, deliberate and heavy—echoed down the hallway. Detective Barnes turned toward the sound, his face hardening.
“They’re here,” he muttered under his breath.
