Chapter Four: The Truth Beneath

The hospital was abuzz with activity, but in Abigail’s room, all was still. Elena couldn’t help but feel the weight of the growing mystery pressing down on her. The more she learned, the less she understood. Abigail’s mother’s connections to the trafficking ring, the strange sedative in her system—it all painted a picture that didn’t quite add up. And Valorian’s disappearance only added to the unease.
Where had the dog gone? Why would someone take him?
Elena stood at Abigail’s side, watching her slowly regain consciousness, her eyes fluttering open with a soft groan. The girl’s gaze was unfocused, but her lips moved as if trying to form words.
“Abigail?” Elena whispered, leaning closer. “Can you hear me?”
The girl’s eyes struggled to focus, finally locking onto Elena. “Where’s the dog?” she murmured, her voice hoarse. “He was here… he… he saved me.”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. The dog. He had been the one constant in Abigail’s life since she had arrived at the hospital. But why did the girl seem so connected to him? What had the mastiff known that they didn’t?
Before Elena could respond, Abigail’s eyes closed again, and her breathing slowed, as if the small burst of consciousness had drained her.
“We need to keep her awake,” Dr. Parker said, entering the room. “We need her to remember. Anything she can tell us could be crucial.”
Elena nodded, though a sinking feeling lingered in her chest. It wasn’t just about getting Abigail to remember; it was about what they could uncover. And the more they dug, the deeper the hole seemed to go.
“We’ll try again later,” Elena said, her voice firm. “But I have to find the dog.”
Dr. Parker’s gaze shifted to the door. “You really think Valorian is important?”
Elena didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she turned to look out the window, her thoughts clouded. Valorian hadn’t just been a dog. He had been a protector, a silent sentinel watching over Abigail. There was something more to this bond, and Elena needed to understand it.
She left the room and made her way down the hall, her mind racing. No one had seen Valorian since the nurse’s report. The hallway was eerily quiet, the usual noise of hospital staff moving around absent. Elena turned the corner, eyes scanning every shadow.
And then she stopped.
A faint scratching sound echoed from a darkened room at the end of the hall. She froze, heart hammering in her chest. Was it the dog?
“Valorian?” she whispered into the silence.
The scratching stopped, and the door creaked open just a crack.
