Puppy Returns To Shelter 11 Times, Then Staff Member Finds Out Why

Chapter 2: Uncovering the Mystery

The rest of Kate’s day passed in a blur. Despite the chaotic encounter with the woman, Kate couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that there was something more to Sadie’s story. As she worked through her usual duties—cleaning kennels, feeding the dogs, and walking them—her mind kept drifting back to that strange conversation. How could a puppy so small cause such chaos? And the fish smell? It all felt too bizarre to be coincidental.

By the time her shift ended, the shelter was quiet again, the usual bustle of activity calming down. Kate sat at her desk, staring at Sadie’s file, which was now sitting in front of her. She felt compelled to dig deeper. Something wasn’t adding up. No dog should go through so many owners in such a short time, especially one that seemed as sweet and innocent as Sadie.

With a deep breath, Kate opened the file, the papers inside crinkling slightly as she flipped through them. The first few pages contained the usual adoption forms—notes about Sadie’s age, her breed, her temperament—but it was when she reached the return forms that the story began to unfold. The notes from Sadie’s previous owners painted a picture of destruction, confusion, and mystery.

She began reading the first return form, written by the first owner. It seemed normal enough at first: “Sadie is a sweet puppy, but she seems to have separation anxiety. She chews on furniture and barks constantly when left alone.” But then the next part caught her attention: “Every night, she escapes the house. No matter how securely we lock everything, she manages to get out. We found her in the neighbor’s yard this morning. She smelled… strange. Like fish. I can’t explain it, but the smell was overpowering.”

Kate’s brow furrowed. The same complaint—escape at night and the fish smell—appeared in every report. She flipped to the next one. The next owner described a similar experience: “Sadie was a sweet puppy, but she would tear up the furniture when left alone. Even worse, she started disappearing at night. She came back in the morning covered in mud, and that awful fish smell followed her wherever she went.” The third report, the fourth, and the fifth all echoed the same strange story: destruction during the day, escapes at night, and the unpleasant smell of rotting fish.

Kate swallowed hard, the hair on the back of her neck standing up. What was going on? Why was Sadie escaping? And why did she smell like fish every time she came back? The more Kate read, the more questions piled up in her mind. There had to be something else at play here. Something she wasn’t seeing.

The last return form was the most recent one, written just the day before by the woman who had returned Sadie earlier that morning. It was filled with anger and frustration, but it also offered more details: “Sadie managed to escape again last night. I don’t know how she’s doing it, but she always gets out. This time, she left a hole in my door. When she came back this morning, she was covered in that slimy substance again. She smells like rotten fish. I’m done with her. You need to take her back.”

Kate set the last form down on the desk and leaned back in her chair. She could feel the tension in her shoulders, the weight of the mystery growing heavier with every new piece of information she uncovered. She glanced over at Sadie, who was curled up in her kennel, looking like an innocent puppy. How could this little dog be capable of such destruction? And why had she been returned so many times?

Her thoughts turned to Sadie’s behavior. The escapes, the fish smell, the destruction. It all seemed so strange, so out of the ordinary. Was Sadie somehow causing all this chaos on purpose? Or was something else influencing her actions? Kate’s mind raced as she tried to piece together the puzzle. She couldn’t help but think back to the one thing that seemed to remain constant in all the reports—the mysterious fishy smell. Was it just a coincidence, or was it a clue?

Kate decided it was time to investigate further. She wasn’t about to let this mystery go unsolved. She stood up, walked over to the shelter’s phone, and dialed the number of the first owner. It was time to get answers.

The phone rang twice before someone picked up. “Hello?” a man’s voice answered.

“Hi, is this Mr. Anderson?” Kate asked politely.

“Yes, speaking,” the man replied.

“Hi, my name is Kate, and I work at the animal shelter where Sadie was returned. I just wanted to follow up with you about your experience with her.”

There was a long pause on the other end of the line before Mr. Anderson replied, “Oh, you’re calling about Sadie. I’ve been meaning to talk to someone there. She’s a sweet dog, but honestly, I don’t know what’s going on with her. She’s constantly running off, and I can’t figure out how she’s doing it. Every morning, I wake up to find her gone, and my house is a mess.”

Kate’s heart sank. She had heard this all before, but she pressed on. “And you mentioned the smell—what did it smell like?”

“Rotten fish. That’s the best way I can describe it,” Mr. Anderson said with a sigh. “She would always come back smelling like that, no matter how much we bathed her. I don’t know where she was going, but it didn’t seem right.”

Kate’s mind raced. This wasn’t just a coincidence anymore. There was a pattern here, and she needed to figure out what it meant.

“I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me,” Kate said, her voice thoughtful. “I’ll keep investigating. Thank you.”

She hung up the phone, her mind buzzing with the new information. This was no longer just a case of a mischievous puppy. There was something more at play here, something that Kate was determined to uncover.

But where would she start? How could a puppy like Sadie be escaping every night? And what was the source of the awful fish smell?

As Kate sat back in her chair, she realized that the answers were out there, waiting to be found. And she was ready to uncover them, no matter how strange or unsettling the truth might be.

The clock on the wall ticked slowly as Kate pondered her next move. She had a feeling that she was only scratching the surface of something much bigger than she had ever imagined.

And the more she thought about it, the more she realized—this was just the beginning.
