Chapter 3: The Search for Answers

The next few days felt like a blur to Kate. She continued her usual duties at the shelter, but her mind was preoccupied with the mystery of Sadie. The little puppy had been returned to the shelter eleven times, and yet no one had been able to figure out why. Kate’s curiosity had turned into obsession. She needed to know what was going on with Sadie, and she wasn’t about to let it go.
After a restless night, Kate arrived at the shelter early one morning, determined to continue her investigation. She started by reviewing Sadie’s file again, looking for any additional clues that might have been missed. Each return form was similar, filled with complaints of destruction, nightly escapes, and the same strange fishy smell. The stories all seemed to overlap, but there was still one key piece of the puzzle missing—why was Sadie escaping, and where was she going?
Kate knew she couldn’t solve this alone. She needed to speak with the past owners, one by one, to piece together the truth. But there was one problem—no one had stayed in contact. After the returns, all the owners had seemed to move on, leaving Sadie behind. Kate could understand their frustration, but it made her task that much harder. She decided to start with the first owner again, Mr. Anderson, the man who had adopted Sadie as a puppy.
Picking up the phone, Kate dialed the number she had found in the file. It rang for a while before someone finally picked up.
“Hello?” Mr. Anderson’s voice was weary but polite.
“Hi, Mr. Anderson,” Kate said. “This is Kate from the shelter. I wanted to follow up on Sadie. I’m trying to understand what happened, and I was hoping you could help me out.”
There was a brief silence on the other end, and Kate could hear a deep sigh. “Sadie, huh? I was wondering when you’d call.”
“I know this is probably hard for you,” Kate said, trying to keep her tone gentle. “But I really need to understand more about her behavior. Could you tell me a little bit more about what happened after you adopted her?”
Mr. Anderson paused for a moment before speaking, his voice low. “She was a sweet dog, really. At first, we thought she was a perfect fit for the family. But then, it started getting strange. Every night, she would disappear. No matter how tightly we locked the doors, how many barriers we put up, she found a way out. And when she came back, she was always covered in something… slimy. Something that smelled awful, like rotten fish. We didn’t know what to do.”
Kate jotted down his words, her heart sinking. The pattern was unmistakable. The fish smell, the escapes. It was all there, every single time. But what did it all mean?
“Did she ever show signs of being hurt or afraid when she came back?” Kate asked, hoping for some insight.
“No,” Mr. Anderson replied, “she was always fine. Happy, even. It was as if nothing had happened. But the smell—God, it was unbearable. We tried everything to get rid of it, but it never went away. Eventually, we just couldn’t take it anymore. We had to bring her back.”
Kate felt a wave of frustration wash over her. She had so many questions, but no answers. She needed to speak to more people. “Thank you for your time, Mr. Anderson,” she said. “I really appreciate it.”
After hanging up, Kate felt even more determined. She couldn’t stop now. She had to keep going. She moved on to the second owner, a woman named Claire who had adopted Sadie a few months later.
The conversation with Claire was much the same. She described how Sadie had caused chaos in her home, chewing through furniture and escaping at night. Claire, too, spoke of the same strange smell. “I thought it was just something I was imagining at first,” Claire explained. “But no. Every time she came back, that smell was there, like rotten fish.”
Kate couldn’t believe it. It was all so consistent. But why? Why did Sadie keep escaping? Why the fish smell?
Determined to find an answer, Kate continued making calls. Each new conversation was more of the same—Sadie escaping, returning smelling of fish, and causing destruction. But no one had any answers. Kate began to feel like she was chasing shadows.
She spent the next few days at the shelter, trying to piece together the mystery in her spare time. But the more she looked into Sadie’s past, the more questions piled up. It was as though the dog was hiding something, something no one had yet discovered.
One evening, as Kate sat at her desk reviewing the stack of papers, she felt a tug on her sleeve. She looked down to see Sadie sitting next to her, her big blue eyes looking up at her innocently. Kate smiled softly, reaching down to scratch the little puppy behind the ears.
“You must have a story to tell, huh?” Kate murmured, as if Sadie could answer. “I’ll figure this out. I promise.”
But as she stared into Sadie’s eyes, Kate couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something else. Something that Sadie wasn’t telling her. She knew she had to do more. She had to get to the bottom of this mystery once and for all.
The next morning, Kate made the decision to take a different approach. She would follow Sadie. She had to see for herself what the puppy was doing at night, where she was going. Kate couldn’t just rely on other people’s accounts anymore. She needed to witness it firsthand.
That evening, after the shelter had closed, Kate brought Sadie home with her. It wasn’t standard procedure, but she was determined. She locked all the doors and windows in her apartment and settled in for a long night. She was going to watch the little dog, and she wasn’t going to miss a single moment.
As the hours passed, Kate kept her eyes on Sadie, who was curled up in her kennel, looking as sweet and innocent as ever. She didn’t stir, not once. Kate felt a slight relief. Maybe, just maybe, the complaints from the previous owners had been exaggerated. Maybe there was no mystery after all.
But then, at exactly 2:00 a.m., something strange happened. Sadie began to stir, her ears perked up, and she let out a soft whine. Kate’s heart began to race. She watched in disbelief as the little dog stood up, walked to the door, and scratched at it. The door was locked. But Sadie didn’t seem to care.
Kate sat up, wide awake now. What was happening? She watched as Sadie continued her strange behavior. The puppy paced back and forth, looking at the door, then at Kate, as though trying to communicate something. After a few minutes, Sadie returned to her kennel and lay back down, looking at Kate with innocent eyes.
Kate sat there for a long time, her mind whirling. What had just happened? Why had Sadie behaved like that? Was she trying to escape? And if so, why?
There was no way around it. Kate had to know the truth. She needed to follow Sadie, see where she went, and find out exactly what was going on.
To be continued…
