Chapter 4: A Closer Look

The following day, Kate could hardly contain her curiosity. She had already spoken with several of Sadie’s former owners, but each conversation left her with more questions than answers. Each owner had described the same strange behavior—Sadie’s nightly escapes, her return covered in a mysterious goo, and the pervasive smell of rotten fish. But no one could explain why Sadie did it. Where was she going? And why did she keep running away, only to return like nothing had happened?
Kate knew that she couldn’t just keep asking others about Sadie’s past. She needed to see it for herself. She had already started to track Sadie’s behavior at her apartment, but that wasn’t enough. She had to follow the little dog, see for herself where she was going and what she was doing at night. Kate couldn’t rest until she uncovered the truth.
That night, as the shelter’s lights dimmed and the last few volunteers filtered out, Kate decided it was time to take action. She grabbed Sadie’s leash and hooked it to her collar, preparing for what she knew would be a long and potentially dangerous night. She wasn’t sure what to expect, but she was determined to find out.
When Kate arrived home, she made sure the apartment was locked and secure. She wasn’t taking any chances. The night stretched out before her, and the quiet only seemed to heighten her anticipation. Sadie was curled up in her bed, looking as innocent as ever, her blue eyes blinking up at Kate with the same trusting gaze she’d always had. It was hard to believe that this small, sweet puppy could be capable of the mysterious behavior described by the previous owners.
As the night wore on, Kate kept her eyes fixed on Sadie. She knew that, based on the patterns from previous reports, Sadie would try to escape as soon as the house grew quiet. She couldn’t afford to fall asleep; she had to be ready. Kate quietly adjusted the hidden camera she had set up in the living room, checking the monitor to make sure it was working.
And then, at exactly 2:13 a.m., Sadie began to stir.
Kate held her breath as she watched the little dog stand up, her ears perked, and her tail wagging slightly. Sadie sniffed the air, then padded to the door, scratching at it as if she had done this many times before. Kate’s heart skipped a beat. This was it. This was the moment she had been waiting for.
Sadie gave one final scratch at the door before pawing it open, pushing through with surprising strength for such a small dog. Kate quickly sprang to her feet, quietly moving toward the door to follow. She had to be discreet—if Sadie noticed her, the whole plan would be ruined.
As she crept behind the little dog, Kate felt a sense of urgency. This was it. The answer to the mystery was just beyond her reach. Sadie, unaware of Kate’s presence, trotted out the door and down the stairs. Kate moved as quietly as possible, making sure to stay a few steps behind, never letting Sadie out of her sight.
The night air was cool as they stepped outside, and the sounds of the city were muffled, almost as if the world was holding its breath. Sadie trotted confidently down the street, her movements fluid and determined. Kate kept her distance, doing her best to blend into the shadows as she followed the little dog through the quiet neighborhood.
Sadie led Kate through a series of winding streets and alleyways, her pace steady but unhurried. It was clear that she knew exactly where she was going, and Kate was starting to get an unsettling feeling in her stomach. Where was this puppy headed? Why was she so intent on leaving every night?
Eventually, Sadie stopped at the entrance to a small, dimly lit alley. Kate hesitated for a moment, her instincts warning her that this was no ordinary alley. There was something strange about it, something that felt off. But there was no turning back now—Kate had come this far.
She stepped into the alley, making sure to keep a safe distance from Sadie. The alley was narrow, the walls lined with graffiti and debris, and the smell of decay filled the air. Kate wrinkled her nose in disgust. This wasn’t a place she would have ever imagined Sadie visiting.
Sadie, however, seemed unfazed. She walked through the alley with purpose, her nose to the ground. Kate followed cautiously, keeping her eyes peeled for any signs of danger. As they neared the end of the alley, Sadie stopped abruptly, her ears pricked and her eyes scanning the area.
Kate stopped as well, staying hidden in the shadows, and waited. It was then that she noticed the strange sounds emanating from the end of the alley—a low, guttural growl, followed by the scraping of metal against concrete. Something was definitely off. Kate’s heart raced. She had no idea what was ahead, but she knew she had to find out.
With a determined look on her face, Kate stepped forward. As she neared the end of the alley, she saw a small, hidden opening between two rundown buildings. Sadie was already there, sniffing the air and wagging her tail. Kate hesitated for a moment, then stepped closer, peering through the gap.
What she saw next was enough to stop her dead in her tracks.
Inside the small space, there were several other puppies—each one a mixture of breeds, all different sizes, but all clearly living on the streets. They were huddled together, eyes wide with fear and hunger. The air was thick with the smell of damp fur and despair. But it was the scene that broke Kate’s heart: Sadie was there, playing with the other puppies, nuzzling them affectionately.
It became clear in that moment. Sadie wasn’t escaping just to cause trouble—she was looking after them. These were her siblings, her family. She had been caring for them, feeding them, and making sure they stayed hidden from the world. Kate felt a lump form in her throat as she realized the truth.
Sadie wasn’t a troublesome puppy. She was a protector, a caregiver for the little ones she had been separated from. And every night, she was sneaking away to ensure they had food and a safe place to stay.
Kate took a few steps back, her heart heavy with emotion. She hadn’t expected this. She had thought Sadie was a runaway, a dog causing trouble for the sake of it. But now she saw the real reason for her nightly escapes—the desperate need to protect her family.
Kate stayed hidden in the shadows, watching as Sadie interacted with the puppies. For a moment, everything felt still. Then, as if on cue, Sadie looked up at Kate with those big, innocent blue eyes.
It was in that moment that Kate knew she had to help. She had to bring Sadie’s family to safety, and she wasn’t going to leave until she did.
