Puppy Returns To Shelter 11 Times, Then Staff Member Finds Out Why

Chapter 1: The Return to the Shelter

Kate had been volunteering at the animal shelter for over three years now. She had seen her fair share of adoptions, returns, and unusual cases, but nothing could have prepared her for the day that would change everything.

It was a chilly Tuesday morning when Kate arrived at the shelter for her shift. The scent of disinfectant mixed with the faint whiff of dog food in the air, a familiar and oddly comforting smell. The shelter was still relatively quiet when she walked in, a few of the dogs were barking from their kennels as she passed by, excited for their morning walks, but it was otherwise calm.

Little did Kate know, this seemingly ordinary day was about to take an unexpected turn.

Just five minutes after clocking in, the door to the shelter swung open with a force that made the bell above it jingle loudly. A woman stormed in, her footsteps heavy with anger. She had a tense, rigid posture as she approached the front desk. Under her arm was a tiny, trembling puppy—Sadie. The way the woman held the dog, almost like an unwanted object, made Kate uneasy.

The woman’s face was twisted with frustration. Her lips were tightly pressed together, and her eyes were sharp as she marched up to the counter, her heels clicking loudly on the tile floor. Kate looked up, ready to greet the woman as she always did, but something about her posture made her pause.

“I want to speak to the owner right now!” the woman snapped, her voice already rising in anger. “You need to take this puppy back. She’s your problem now.”

Kate was taken aback by the demand, but she quickly composed herself. “I’m sorry, the owner isn’t here right now,” she replied politely, trying to defuse the situation. “But I’ll be happy to help you. What seems to be the problem?”

The woman’s face twisted even further, her frustration escalating. “You know perfectly well what’s wrong with her!” She leaned over the counter, her finger jabbing the air as she spoke. “You were the ones who gave me this horrible dog!” The sharpness of her tone sent a jolt through Kate, and the tension in the room thickened instantly.

“Ma’am, I understand you’re upset, but can you tell me what happened? I’ll try to help,” Kate asked, her voice steady despite the growing tension.

“Don’t act like you don’t know!” The woman shouted, her voice rising even higher. “You gave me this little menace just four days ago, and already she’s ruined everything!” The woman’s voice echoed through the shelter, drawing the attention of a few other volunteers. Kate winced, unsure of how to handle the situation.

“Okay, I’m sorry, I’ll help you however I can,” Kate said, trying to keep her calm. “Let me just fill out a return form so we can sort this out.”

She grabbed a blank return form from the counter and began to fill it in. “Sadie, around four months old,” she murmured, writing down the dog’s name and age. Then, the most important question—“Reason for return?” She looked up at the woman, waiting for an explanation.

The woman inhaled sharply, as though preparing herself for another outburst. She leaned forward again, her eyes blazing with frustration. “This dog doesn’t want to stay with me. She keeps escaping, no matter what I do. I lock every door, every window, and still, she sneaks out at night. You wouldn’t believe the lengths she goes to.”

Kate paused, confused. “What do you mean by lengths?”

The woman’s eyes darted wildly, as though she could hardly believe the situation herself. “She escapes every night! And when I wake up in the morning, my house looks like it’s been through a tornado. Furniture overturned, china broken, floorboards scratched—nothing’s safe! And the worst part is, when I finally catch her, she smells like rotten fish.” The woman’s voice cracked as she spoke, her face red with a mix of exhaustion and fury.

Kate blinked in disbelief, unsure of how to respond. “I… I’m not sure I understand. She smells like fish?”

“Yes!” The woman raised her voice again, her frustration boiling over. “Every single time she comes back, she reeks of it—like a whole pile of rotten fish! I thought she might’ve been near some food, but it’s every day now. I can’t stand it anymore!”

Kate looked at Sadie, who was sitting quietly on the counter, her big blue eyes innocent and wide. How could such a tiny pup cause so much trouble? She felt a pang of sympathy for the dog, but at the same time, the situation seemed too bizarre to comprehend.

“And this morning,” the woman continued, “I found a hole in my front door! This dog is ruining my life!” She threw her hands up in the air, as though to make Kate understand the depth of her frustration.

Kate slowly placed her pen down, processing what she had just heard. She felt sympathy for the woman, but something about this situation didn’t add up. How could such a small puppy cause so much destruction? And why did she smell like rotten fish? Kate was starting to feel more questions than answers piling up in her mind.

“What should I write as the reason for return?” Kate asked, her voice softer this time.

The woman leaned in again, her voice filled with venom. “Write down ‘Destructive behavior and escapes every night. Smells like fish when she comes back.’ I’m done with her. She’s your problem now!” Without another word, the woman snatched her handbag and stormed out, leaving Kate standing there, stunned.

Kate took a deep breath and looked down at Sadie, who nuzzled her gently. The little dog’s innocent gaze made Kate’s heart ache. How could such a sweet pup cause so much trouble? What was really going on? Kate couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Sadie’s story than met the eye.

As she walked toward the back room with Sadie in her arms, Kate’s co-worker, Mark, caught sight of her. He sighed, shaking his head. “Not again,” he muttered, looking at the little dog.

“Not again?” Kate asked, surprised.

“Yeah,” Mark said, his voice heavy with familiarity. “This is the eleventh time she’s been brought back. She’s been through this so many times it’s becoming a joke.”

Kate’s jaw dropped in disbelief. “Eleven times? How could this be? What’s wrong with her?”

Mark just shrugged, looking at Sadie with a mixture of pity and resignation. Kate felt a sinking feeling in her chest. Eleven times. There had to be something more to this story.

As she sat down with Sadie in her lap, Kate stared at the stack of return forms and felt a new determination rise within her. She wasn’t going to let this pup’s story end here, not when so many questions were left unanswered. She was going to get to the bottom of it—no matter what it took.

And so, Kate began to dig deeper into Sadie’s past. Little did she know, this would be the beginning of an investigation that would take her to places she never imagined, uncovering secrets that would change everything.
