Nurse Adopts Abandoned Baby No One Wanted. 18 Years Later, She Cries When She Finally Discovers Why

Chapter 7: Torn Between Two Worlds

Clara sat in the kitchen, her hands trembling as she stirred the pot of soup on the stove. The familiar sound of Emily’s footsteps echoed down the hallway, but Clara couldn’t bring herself to look up. It had been hours since the truth had been revealed—the truth that Emily had parents who had searched for her all these years. The silence between them had grown thick, a wall Clara didn’t know how to break down.

Emily hadn’t come back into the kitchen since the conversation. Clara could hear her in her room, moving around, though there was no sound of tears or anger—just the quiet of a child processing the impossible. Clara’s heart ached for her, for the pain that was so clearly etched on her face when she had left the room.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Emily appeared in the doorway, her expression unreadable. She didn’t speak at first, just stood there, her arms crossed in a defensive stance.

“Emily…” Clara began, her voice soft, but Emily raised a hand, signaling for her to stop.

“I don’t know what to think right now, Mom,” Emily said, her voice distant. “You’ve always told me the truth, but now… now it feels like everything’s a lie. I don’t even know who I am anymore.”

Clara’s heart broke at the words. She stepped closer, but Emily flinched slightly, taking a step back.

“You are who you’ve always been,” Clara said, her voice breaking. “You’re my daughter. You’re the one I’ve raised, the one I’ve loved.”

Emily shook her head, her eyes brimming with frustration and confusion. “But how can that be true? If they’re my real parents, then what does that make you? How am I supposed to feel about them? About you?”

Clara felt the weight of her daughter’s words, the years of love and care she had poured into Emily suddenly feeling inadequate in the face of this new reality. She wanted to explain, to make Emily understand, but the truth was—there were no easy answers.

“I never wanted to keep you from them, Emily,” Clara said, her voice barely a whisper. “I just… I just didn’t want to lose you.”

Emily’s eyes softened for a brief moment before hardening again. “And what about them? What do they want from me?”

Clara paused, the question hanging heavy in the air. “They want you back, Emily. They’ve been looking for you for years. But you don’t have to go with them. You don’t have to choose anyone. I’m here, and I will always be here for you.”

Emily was quiet for a long moment, and Clara held her breath, waiting for her daughter’s response.

Finally, Emily spoke, her voice quiet but firm. “I need to see them. I need to know who they are. I need to know why they left me.”

Clara’s stomach twisted with fear. The moment she had dreaded had arrived—Emily was going to meet the people she had been torn away from.
