Chapter 10: The Breaking Point

The days following the meeting with Emily’s biological parents were a blur of uncertainty. Emily had asked for time, and Clara gave it to her. She knew that the truth had shattered everything they had built, but there was nothing she could do except wait.
Emily had withdrawn into herself, spending hours alone in her room. Clara tried to give her space, but every time she saw the closed door or heard the soft rustle of pages turning, her heart tightened. She wanted to be there for Emily, to offer comfort, but Emily seemed to need the distance. The distance between them was growing, and Clara didn’t know how to close the gap.
It was Friday evening when Emily came to her. Clara had just finished cleaning the kitchen, wiping down the counter as she listened to the quiet hum of the world outside. The door to the living room opened, and Emily stepped in, her eyes searching Clara’s face for something—reassurance, perhaps, or an answer to the questions that were weighing on both of them.
“I’ve been thinking,” Emily said, her voice steady but lacking the usual spark. Clara turned to face her, her heart in her throat.
“About what?” Clara asked softly, her hands still gripping the dish towel in her hands. She knew what was coming, but hearing it aloud felt like an arrow piercing her chest.
“About them,” Emily said, her gaze faltering. “I’ve been thinking about what it would mean if I went to see them again. If I wanted to know more… about where I came from. And what it would mean for us.”
Clara’s breath caught in her throat. The decision Emily was facing was inevitable. She had known this day would come—the day when Emily would question her, would want to know more about her past. But it was still hard to accept that the child she had raised, the daughter she had loved, was now at a crossroads.
“Emily, you don’t have to choose anything right now,” Clara said, her voice breaking slightly. “You don’t have to decide between them and me. I just want you to be happy. I just want you to feel like you belong.”
Emily didn’t answer immediately. She stepped closer, her eyes searching Clara’s face. “I’ve always belonged with you,” she said softly. “But now… I’m not so sure.” Her words hit Clara like a slap.
Clara reached out, her hand trembling as she touched Emily’s arm. “You still belong with me, Emily. Nothing has changed. You’re still my daughter. Always.”
Emily looked away, her expression distant. “But what if I want to know more? What if I need to know who they are? What if I want to see them?”
Clara’s chest tightened with the weight of the words. She had always known this moment would come, but hearing it now, from Emily, felt like a betrayal. She wanted to scream, to beg Emily to stay, to never let go of what they had. But she couldn’t.
“I can’t stop you from wanting answers,” Clara whispered, her voice raw. “But I need you to know this… I will always be here for you, no matter what you decide.”
The words felt hollow in the silence that followed. Emily’s eyes glistened with unshed tears, but she didn’t cry. She only nodded, as though understanding the gravity of the decision she was about to make.
