Chapter 12: The Baby That Brought New Joy

Three years after their wedding, Elara sat in a doctor’s office, holding Ethan’s hand. The ultrasound screen showed a small heartbeat.
“Congratulations,” the doctor said. “You’re 12 weeks pregnant.”
Elara cried. Happy tears. Tears of joy.
She’d never thought she’d have kids—not after her illness, not after Caden. But with Ethan, anything felt possible.
They told their families that night. Marissa brought a cake that said “Baby Cole!” Maya brought onesies—pink and blue.
“I’m going to be an aunt,” Maya said, crying.
Elara hugged her. “Yes. You are.”
The pregnancy was hard—her autoimmune disease flared up a few times—but Ethan was by her side, every step. He took her to appointments, cooked her favorite meals, held her when she was tired.
Nine months later, she gave birth to a little girl—Lila Rose Cole. She was perfect, with Ethan’s brown eyes and Elara’s blonde hair.
Elara held her, tears in her eyes. “Hi, baby,” she whispered. “I’m your mom.”
Ethan kissed her forehead. “She’s beautiful. Just like you.”
Over the next few months, life was a blur of diapers, feedings, and late nights. But Elara wouldn’t have it any other way.
One night, she sat in Lila’s nursery, rocking her to sleep. Ethan stood in the doorway, watching.
“Look at us,” he said. “A family.”
Elara smiled. “I never thought this would happen. Not after everything.”
Ethan walked over and hugged her. “You deserve this, Elara. All of it.”
She looked at Lila, sleeping peacefully. This was her happily ever after. Not the one she’d planned with Caden, but a better one. A real one.
She thought of Caden, of the pain he’d caused. But it didn’t matter anymore. He was a part of her past, but not her future.
Her future was with Ethan. With Lila. With love.
And that was more than she’d ever hoped for.
